We all know work experience is an important part of a student’s development into the world of employment. The Health and Safety Executive has revised its guidance for work experience, with employers having primary responsibility for health and safety and managing significant risks. The HSE guidance is now available.  

Schools retain the duty of care for the students they place throughout the delivery of their work experience programme. Organisers need to check the employer has risk management arrangements in place and make judgements about the suitability of the employer and indeed the student for that employer.  All of these considerations and many more, like the student learning objectives and aspirations, feed into making the work experience as rewarding as it can be.  

The strategic risk management team is now able to offer health and safety work experience employer checks, where you are considering a placement with an employer in occupational areas carrying a risk rating of medium or high. 

The maximum fee for this check will be £36. The fee covers placements within Surrey’s local authority area.  It may be possible to undertake checks out of area and these will be priced accordingly.  

This offer is available to all Surrey maintained schools and academies, which purchase the services of the strategic risk management team from Surrey County Council.
